The concept of an Indian College of Radiology, as the academic wing of the Indian Radiological & Imaging Association was conceived by two stalwarts of our Association, Professor P.K. Haldar and Dr. K.N. Kamdar in the year 1970. The First pre-congress teaching session (Continuing Medical Education) was conducted at the 27th Annual Congress of IRIA at Indore in January 1974, with Prof. P.K. Haldar as the Chairman with Dr. K.N. Kamdar & Prof. Arcot Gajaraj as co-ordinators and Dr. B. D. Gupta as the Secretary of the CME.
The General Body of the Indian Radiological Association gave official recognition to the establishment of the College during the 28th Annual Congress at Hyderabad in 1975. The pre-congress CME programs of the Indian College of Radiology became a regular annual feature.
ICRI was established as a teaching (academic) wing of the Association in 1976 by Late Prof. P.K. Haldar and Dr. K.N. Kamdar. Prof. P.K. Haldar was the first Founder Chairman of the college followed by Dr. K.N. Kamdar. During initial period of six years activities were mainly confirmed to day’s teaching programme (C.M.E.) prior to the Annual Congress of IRA. The first set of rules & regulations of the Indian College of Radiology & Imaging was formulated and these became effective in January 1977.
With the untimely demise of Prof. P.K. Haldar in 1976, Dr. K. N. Kamdar succeeded as the Chairman, with Prof. Arcot Gajaraj as the Vice Chairman and Dr. B. D. Gupta as the Secretary. Prof. B. N. Lal was elected as Chairman of the College in 1978 at the 31st Annual Congress of the Indian Radiological Association, at Lucknow. Professor B. N. Lal resigned as Chairman in 1979 and Prof. Arcot Gajaraj succeeded as Chairman and Dr. B.D. Gupta continued as the Secretary, at the 32nd Annual Congress of IRIA at Bombay (Mumbai). Dr. Samir Banerjee became the Secretary of the College in 1981.
In 1981, with Prof. Arcot Gajaraj becoming the Chairman, academic activities were given impetus and an attempt was made to organize as many C.M.E. programs as possible throughout the year in different parts of the country so that interest in imaging is created for post-graduates as well as the Clinicians. Dr. Samir Banerjee, Secretary of the College and Dr. G.R. Jankharia, Treasurer has improved administrative and academic activities of the College. In 1984, under Chairmanship of Dr. G.R. Jankharia, it became mandatory to conduct four to six CME programs prior to Annual Congress. In 1986, at Jaipur, Convocation was held to award fellowship of ICR to the Founder Members of the College.
